Apple has reported that iPhone 5 pre-orders reached 2 million in 24 hours, doubling iPhone 4S pre-orders.

Surprising?  Far from it.

The iPhone 4S was a “nice” upgrade from the iPhone 4, and the best iPhone at that time, but not worthy enough of being named the iPhone 5.  Apple proceeded to do the same thing with the New iPad.  There were changes made, but not enough to deserve the name, the iPad 3 or the rumored iPad Mini.

The average user can’t tell the difference between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S, nor the new iPad and iPad 2, but put an iPhone 5 in their hand…ding, ding, ding!

Does this mean that if you bought an iPhone 4S or New iPad that you got ripped off, scammed or taken advantage of?  Not at all.  Both devices are awesome and worthy of their price tags.

So what does it mean that iPhone 5 pre-orders reached 2 million in 24 hours?  Apple has once again proven to be the marketing masters – as well as the makers and creators of a lot of kick-ass products.

When the iPad was released, the critics and nay-sayers were ranting that there was no camera, no USB port, it doesn’t support flash, blah, blah, blah…and they were right.  Did Apple know that the original iPad would have been a better product with a camera?  Of course.  Does the New iPad have a USB port?  Of course not.

Apple knows exactly what they’re doing, which is they released the iPad before all of its competitors, even without a camera, and why most people refer to any tablet as an iPad.  Apple knew that they had to make a noticeable difference with the iPhone 5 – and not just with speed and graphics, thus the 4-inch iPhone 5 screen is the first iPhone since it was released to change in size (smaller or larger).  Apple might not have known that they were going to sell 2 million in 24 hours, but I find it hard to believe that they’re surprised that they have, nor that the pre-order wait time is already pushed back to 2-3 weeks.

Apple worked it’s marketing magic.  Sold gazillions of them (yes, “gazillions” is a real world – I read it on the “Internets”….) and kept us waiting for number 5.

Well, the wait is over.  Apple officially announced the iPhone 5 on Wednesday, and it was worth the wait, which is exactly what you’ll have to do if you want to pre-order it now.

The iPhone 5 was made available for pre-order on Friday and sold out in 1 hour.  Any order after that showed a delivery date of 2 weeks, which will be a week after it’s available in stores, this Friday.  As of right now, Saturday at 2PM, pre-order delivery time for the iPhone 5 is now estimated at 2-3 weeks – regardless of model or carrier.

So what’s the big deal about the iPhone 5 that probably has people lined up at Apple stores already?

Aside from my commentary, this is the information that most people are interested in:

• The iPhone 5 comes in Black & Slate and White & Silver
• It’s offered in the US by AT&T, Verizon and Sprint
• It can be pre-ordered on Apple’s website (limit 2 per customer), at BestBuy and RadioShack stores (and I’m sure there are a couple of places that I’m missing…)
• It costs $199 for the 16GB model, $299 for the 32GB model and $399 for the 64GB model – **if you’re available for an upgrade or you’re a new customer
• …AND it has a new lightning charger!

That’s all folks, at least for right now.

Sometimes I’ll use the “Update All” button to save time, but depending on how many updates there are and what apps are being updated, will determine whether I read the details of the update.  I always read Dragonvale updates because they release a new gemstone dragon every month.  I read the Temple Run update because it hasn’t been updated since I downloaded it, which ended up announcing some minor updates and upgrades to the game.  I did the same with Tiny Wings, which basically released Tiny Wings 2 without creating a new app for it, as well as releasing an official iPad version of the app.

Push notifications are powerful, but don’t underestimate the power of app updates.  Temple Run, which announced that it has been downloaded 100 million times in its update, has added more life to it’s iPhone and iPad app, as well as tapping into popularity of the Temple Run Brave app too in some way, shape and form that I have yet to figure out.  Temple Run Brave is currently the #10 on the Top Paid iPad app list (Tiny Wings is #53), where it sat in the #1 spot for awhile, as well as being ranked #162 on the Top Grossing app chart too.  Temple Run is back in the #44 spot for Top Free iPad apps and #147 on the Top Grossing iPad app list.

Although being ranked in the 147th and 162nd spots might not sound as impressive as top 10, top 25 or even top 100, any game in the Top Grossing iPhone or iPad Apps chart is making “dolla’ dolla’ bills y’all.”  In these cases, it’s not as if they weren’t making money before, but the updates gave them a big financial boost out of nowhere and increase their popularity as rumors of the new iPhone 5 start to spread like wildfire.

Point being, whether it’s a push notification, an update or in this case, an update that includes an iPad app release, it’s a great way to get more people to use your new or updated app, get more people to your website (we’ll see if Pinterest.com traffic increases) and make some more “chedda, yo’.”

The second reason is that although Pinterest never had an official iPad app, there were other “unofficial” Pinterest apps available.  It’s the same situation with Instagram, which if you live under a rock and don’t know, was bought by Facebook for $1 billion. No iPad app, nor a website.  On one hand, who am I to question the reasoning behind their choice of a company that just got bought for $1 billion by another company who was valued at around $100 billion at the time of its recent IPO.

There has to be a good reason behind the option to not make an iPad app for Instagram, right?  Who knows.  In my personal opinion, I think an Instagram iPad app could only lead to good things.

The Pinterest iPad app is #7 on the Top Free iPad Apps list and keeps climbing.  It’s a smooth, clean and easy to use app, which should prosper given it’s increasing popularity combined with the new iPad’s retina display (not that it looks bad on the original or 2nd iPad, I’m just saying…).  You can search the web within the app to find pictures to pin, but not Pinterest.com, nor can you upload pictures from your camera roll to pin either.  Hmm, interesting….

I don’t use Pinterest that much, so I’m curious to see if I’ll use it more now that it’s on my iPad.  Will you?  Do you use Pinterest now?  Will Pinterest’s iPad app boost its iPhone app ranking?  Do you think Instagram should have an iPad app?  Let me know in the comments below!

The list is endless. A5 chip, 8MP camera, 1080 HD video, 200 additional features integrated into iOS 5 and let’s not forget about Siri.

As much as I LOVE the iPhone, this post is NOT about the iPhone 4S.

Motorola released the “impossibly thin” Droid Razr today.  Thin has to be an understatement.  I saw a couple of Droid’s this weekend and they were incredibly thin, so I can’t imagine how thin the Razr is, nor do I care – ok, so I’m a little curious, but it ends there.

The iPhone 3GS feels smoother when I hold her in my hand.  She’s sexy.  Her curves rival those of Jessica Rabbit.  I prefer to hold the iPhone 3GS over the iPhone 4, BUT I don’t.

Every time Apple releases a new iPhone, it’s superior to the last one.  Faster, better camera, another camera, new service provider, new features, more features, more capabilities.

The “secret” behind it all is evolution.

Here’s another “shocking” news flash, the next iPhone will be better than this one.

What You Really Want To Know About The iPhone 4S

iPhone 4S sales will be insane.  Sprint is the new kid on the block and they’re bringing their posse with them.  AT&T and Verizon customers will buy it too.  Blackberry users have been fighting the urge for a long time.  It might be their time.  Either way, the sales numbers will be shocking, even though we know what to expect.

Anyone who doesn’t buy it will knock it for any reason they can find:

“I’m waiting for the iPhone 5……It’s not that much better than the iPhone 4……I heard it has glitches to be worked out…..The next one will have a 12MP camera…….”

Been there, done that.

The iPhone 4S has incredible new upgrades:

• A5 chip
• 8MP camera
• 1080 HD video recording
• Siri
• iCloud
• iOS 5

iOS 5 is being released to current iPhone owners on Oct. 12th.  iMessenger, Reminders, Twitter integration and more.

Bottom line, the iPhone 4S is the greatest iPhone of all time AND the next one will be better.

If you can afford it, get it.  If you can’t, get a free 8GB iPhone 3GS for free (with a new two year contract of course).

Pricing for the iPhone 4S will be $199 for 16GB (black and white), $299 for 32GB and $399 for 64GB, which is the first time that an iPhone will have the capacity to hold up to 64GB.  The iPhone 4 will still be available for $99 in both black and white, and the 3GS will be available for free.  Yes, free.

Hardware updates for the iPhone 4S include:

• A5 Chip – up to 7x faster than the older iPhones “Dual-core CPU, 2x as fast at CPU tasks. Also dual-core graphics”
• 8MP Camera Sensor
• 1080 HD Video Recording
• New Antenna System - CDMA/GSM chip for various networks, making it a world-wide phone
• Siri – Voice Controlled “Virtual Assistant”

iOS 5 features, which will be released on Oct. 12th for all iPhones, include:

• iMessage – free messenger-to-messenger feature which seems similar to the BlackBerry Messenger system
• Notification Center
• Reminders

What can we expect?  Mashable is reporting that the new iPhone 5 has been rumored to have an “8 MP camera, 1 GB of RAM, an aluminum back, a larger screen and a slew of other upgrades.”  Voice control and adding Sprint to the list of available carriers are expected as well.

A lot of people want to know why it took Apple so long to bring the iPhone to Verizon, and now Sprint, which was leaked in the memo from BestBuy (see the memo and read more about the Pre-Order iPhone 5 from Sprint, BestBuy).

I don’t know if the iPhone 5 Sprint rumor is true, nor do I care why it took them so long.  I do know that according to CNN, Apple has more cash than the US government, so they must be doing something right.

As far as the other expected features are concerned, voice control makes perfect sense.  One of the most impressive, yet under valued and barely used apps, Siri, was created Nuance and eventually bought by Apple.  Nuance’s Dragon Go! and Dragon Dictation but use the same voice recognition technology, yet neither is considered a popular or top iPhone app.  Not only are these apps cool, but they’re useful too.  For now, we’re going to have to wait and see about the future of voice control.

Regardless of the updates and improvements that Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook introduces with the iPhone 5, any iPhone is an incredible device to have.  The iPhone is more than a phone.  In fact, the phone is just an added feature.  The true power of the iPhone comes from it’s apps.

Yes, she’s beautiful, sexy, fast and powerful, but so are other phones.  The iPhone is a portable computer with less power.  The saying “there’s an app for that” is dead on.  Think of almost anything and there’s an app for it, which aside from Apple’s marketing, makes the iPhone the best in its class.

BGR has updated the story to say that iPhone 5 pre-orders will start this week:

“……possible presales will be starting this week with the phone arriving in the first week of October, not preorders starting in October.”

Aside from the news of the release and pre-order dates, the other breaking news is that the iPhone 5 will be available on Sprint.

Is this another “new, real, leaked” picture?  Possibly.

Maybe Apple is looking to bring some life back to their stock that recently dipped when Steve Jobs “quit.”  Maybe Apple realizes thatback-to-school shopping is done at places like Bestbuy, which would be great time to start taking pre-orders.

Then again, I don’t work for Apple, Bestbuy or Sprint, so what do I know?

I know that this Apple’s 5th edition of the iPhone with possibly the 3rd new carrier AND it’s still the hottest rumor since Brad and Jen broke up.

What was I doing?  Playing with my iPhone. I wrote about the eBay Fashion iPhone app, which lets you try on virtual sunglasses to see what you look like in them before you buy……and now I’m writing about it again.   Augmented reality, the technology behind the app, has come a long way, and it’s still picking up steam.  Similar to QR codes, it’s just a matter of time before it hits the masses.

iPhone and Android apps aren’t the mystery they used to be.  With services like Appsbar now available, anyone can make an iPhone app for free.  That’s right, for FREE! Without going too far off topic, to have an iPhone app, iPad app or Android app made using augmented reality, won’t cost you as much as it used to.  Outsourcing services such as oDesk, Elance and rent-a-coder can have it all done for you at a very good price.

Trying on sunglasses with the eBay Fashion app is fun.  I’m not in the market for sunglasses, but I used it anyway, and I’m not the only one.

Every store that sells eye glasses and sun glasses should have an iPhone, iPad 2 or any other tablet with a camera, waiting for customers to use.

If you don’t want to spend the money for your own app, use the eBay Fashion app.  Let customers take a picture and send it to their friends and family to get their opinions.

As you can see, this is just the tip of the iceberg on a lot of these topics.  For businesses, the bottom line is that the potential is there and the resources are here.  For consumers, have some fun and try on some virtual sunglasses.  If you can’t find a pair on eBay or Amazon, you can check out Memorial Day sales on BestBuyEyeglasses and FramesDirect.
