One of the most important things I’ve learned from Internet Marketing is that you don’t have to reinvent the wheel.  Instead, take something that’s already working and put your own spin on it.

“What does this have to do with the video” you ask.  Let me tell you.

Most songs are between 3-5 minutes (I have no empirical data or statistics to back that up at all, just go with it for now).  Most videos might extend a little bit longer.

In this video, I Need A Doctor, Dre extends the video to over 7 minutes.  The music doesn’t start until 2:45 into the video.  Much like his protege, Eminem, Dre is much more than an artist, producer and entertainer, he’s a marketing master.

Dr. Dre and Eminem have turned themselves into brand names (check out my previous post Marketing With Marshall).  50 Cent, another Shady-Aftermath artist, has done it too.

Eminem is all over TV in the new Brisk Iced Tea commercials, Beats by Dre headphones and speakers can be found in Staples, Best Buy and J & R Music and 50 took “quarter water sold it in bottles for 2 bucks, Coca-Cola came and bought it for billions.”

The Vitamin Water deal was supposedly for $400 million, but that’s not the point.  Instead of trying to compete with the other artists out there on a lyrical level, Dre separates himself by using a 2 minute and 45 second introduction/storyline including the likes of Easy-E, Tupac, Snoop Dogg and Eminem.

Bottom line, it’s a good song and video, but there’s much more to it than meets the eye.  Enjoy!

What do you think?  Do you like the video?  Song?  Talk to me……
